Bratz Dolls Cause Anorexia
Bratz dolls, video games and advertising are causing anorexia and bulima in young girls a report has revealed.
The report, by the American Psychological Association, found that the sexualised images of girls in toys such as Bratz as well as advertising, other toys and video games is causing young girls to become anorexic and bulimic. These toys are said to make young girls focus on looks rather than anything else.
The report also claims that girls exposed to these media images and toys stop believing in themselves resulting in low self esteem and depression.
In turn our young girls are only able to place value on themselves by the way they look. Our young girls are only placing value on themselves by the way they look
The report defines sexualisation as occurring when a person's value comes only from her sexual appeal or behaviour to the exclusion of other characteristics. In other words, girls only believe in themselves if they match up to society's view of what is attractive. They learn what society thinks through advertising, the media and toys. These girls don't view gifts such as intelligence as attractive or good and that intelligence won't make them attractive to society.
Examples of this in the media include adverts, music lyrics, merchandising of toys such as Bratz dolls who have very slim bodies, large heads and wear the trendiest fashions.

Consequences of Sexualisation of Young Girls
"The consequences of the sexualisation of girls in media today are very real and are likely to be a negative influence on girls' healthy development," said Eileen L. Zurbriggen, PhD, chair of the APA Task Force and associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Dr Zurbriggen added: "As a society, we need to replace all of these sexualised images with ones showing girls in positive settings-ones that show the uniqueness and competence of girls. The goal should be to deliver messages to all adolescents-boys and girls-that lead to healthy sexual development."
The research evidence carried out by the American Psychological Association showed that the sexualisation of girls negatively affects girls and young women in several ways: They often lack self confidence and are not comfortable with their own bodies leading to emotional and self image problems such as shame and anxiety. They can also suffer from eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression. Research also showed that this sexualisation has negative consequences on girls' ability to develop a healthy sexual self-image.

What Can We Do to Help?
The APA believes parents can play a major role in protecting and educating their . The APA report has called on parents, school officials, and all health professionals to be alert for the potential impact of sexualization on girls and young women. Schools, the APA says, should teach media literacy skills to all students and should include information on the negative effects of the sexualization of girls in media literacy and sex education programs in a bid to battle this media disease.
